Case Study - University of Kentucky

CAMPUS STUDENTS, STAFF ARE NOW CONNECTED

LEXINGTON, KY (Jan. 2, 2006) – Independence Communications Inc., a wireless systems integrator headquartered in Cleveland, recently completed an in-building wireless solution at the University of Kentucky to allow cell phone reception within four dorm buildings.

As many people can attest to, securing and maintaining a signal on a cell phone inside a building is quite a challenge. University service personnel were unable to use their cell phones to speak to other personnel and staff on the service floors or in the underground tunnels connecting the buildings. Students also found it difficult to obtain a signal within the dorms when talking to friends and family.

This prompted the university to retain Independence Communications on Aug. 8 to resolve the connectivity issue. Work began immediately after with engineering and cabling surveys and continued through the fall semester on: Ingels Hall, Baldwin Hall, Smith Hall and New North Hall.

“Cell phone reception in buildings, especially on campuses, has been an important issue,” said Don DiGeronimo, president of Independence Communications Inc. “We are pleased to have had the opportunity to work with the University of Kentucky on this successful project.”

Independence’s solution was to implement a Powerwave Distributed Antenna System (DAS) with antennas and repeaters in each dorm as well as a main room for overall system control.

The DAS allows a wireless signal to flow throughout the four dorms, from the basement to roof, offering complete cell phone access to students and staff. The project entailed the pulling of over 14,000 feet of cable, 120 antennas and several repeaters for each carrier.

Independence Communications was responsible for the installation of all equipment, coordination of the subcontractors and ensuring that the entire system worked properly. The system was operational on Dec. 14.
