Case Study - City of Detroit

Xplore’s Rugged Tablet Computing Systems Selected by City of Detroit

Xplore receives 400 unit order from project sub-contractor Independence Communications

AUSTIN, TX – July 17, 2003 – Xplore Technologies Corp. (TSX: XPL), a leading international developer, producer and distributor of rugged wireless tablet computer systems, has received an order for 400 rugged tablet PC’s for the City of Detroit Police Department. The purchase order which included 500 law enforcement docking stations and related accessories was issued by Independence Communications, an authorized Xplore Platinum reseller, who has been subcontracted by Tiburon, Inc. to be the systems integrator for the mobile portion of the Detroit Police Department Project. Tiburon, an industry leader in providing complete, integrated public safety and criminal justice data systems, is the prime vendor for the City of Detroit project.

According to Deputy Chief Gloria Reynolds from the City of Detroit Police Department, “We did extensive research and evaluated several systems integrators and top manufacturers for rugged mobile computing platforms. Our project team solicited input from our officers, as well as IT and maintenance personnel prior to making our selection. We needed a systems integrator that had a proven track record for deployment and management, and a mobile computing configuration that was flexible and dynamic enough to meet the complex needs of a large urban department such as ours. In evaluating all of the different form factors, it was clear that a traditional laptop or a fixed in vehicle terminal would not work for our application. Xplore’s tablet form factor ideally met our diverse requirements and Independence Communications has the expertise and experience to provide an overall mobile computing system.”

Deputy Chief Reynolds added, “Key product features that resulted in the selection of Xplore’s rugged MaximusPRO Tablet computing system included the larger screen size, portability, ease of docking and undocking, the responsive touch screen and the overall durability of the system.”

Don DiGeronimo, President of Independence Communications stated, “We are honored to be able to support the City of Detroit Police Department in their efforts to advance into the next generation of law enforcement technology. We have a proven systems integration methodology that is ideally suited to public safety agencies requiring turnkey deployment and support and are pleased to add another Xplore systems user to our growing suite of customers throughout the north central United States.”

As part of its systems integration duties, Independence Communications will be removing the existing older Mobile Data Terminals from the cities police vehicles and installing Xplore’s rugged MaximusPRO Tablet computers and law enforcement docking system, as well as Pentax printers, magnetic stripe readers, GPS and Lund Industries console boxes. Independence will also be upgrading the existing radio system to IP digital radio 19,200 bps and installing a CISCO high speed 802.11b network (hot spots only) at fifteen precincts throughout the city and at one service location.

Utilizing Tiburon’s comprehensive Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) and Reporting Software suite, with Xplore’s rugged hardware systems, officers in the City of Detroit will have the ability to run license plates and ID checks, receive CAD calls, initiate car to car communications and access local, state and federal databases while in their police vehicles.

“We are pleased to welcome the City of Detroit, which is well known as a leader in the law enforcement industry, to Xplore’s growing family of rugged mobile computing users,” said Mark Holleran, Vice President of Sales for Xplore Technologies. “Working closely with our premier partners, such as Independence Communications, we see a continuing trend towards the adoption of more rugged, tablet style computers as a standard for public safety agencies. The durability, reliability, flexibility and portability of our devices provide a strong return on investment for law enforcement users nationwide. Tiburon and Independence have done a great job of putting together a complete solution to meet the needs for the City of Detroit.”

Xplore reported this sale to Independence in the consolidated sales backlog number released today.
